Dr. Finlay has received many awards and honors which include his service in the military for five years, including assignments in Haiti and the Pentagon
and was a General Military Officer at the Pentagon.
Dr. Finlay oversaw medical and emergency care at the UN and the Peace Corps and was assigned to the
President of the U.S., William J. Clinton, the Presidential Party, and other dignitaries.
Dr. Finlay is Assistant Professor of Surgery and Radiology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.
Dr. Finlay spoke about carotid artery disease and explained to the audience that the carotid arteries deliver oxygenated blood to the brain.
The doctor explained that carotid artery disease is characterized by the accumulation of plaque in the carotid arteries, resulting in stenosis of the arteries and
reduced blood flow to the brain.
In the course of the presentation, Dr. Finlay also discussed peripheral vascular disease, a narrowing of the peripheral blood vessels that supply oxygenated blood to the
organs outside the brain and heart, such as the arms, legs, and organs below the stomach.

On Tuesday, July 12th, the highly distinguished guest was Dr. Daniel Han.
Dr. Han spoke about peripheral arterial disease, a medical condition characterized by the narrowing of the arteries in the legs.
The doctor explained that when plaque builds up in the artery, it affects the blood flow, depriving the normal tissue of oxygen and
other nutrients. This causes the artery to become less elastic. The artery can rupture, forming a blood clot.
The high risk factors include smoking, diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol, with any combination increasing the risk factors
even more.
The doctor also mentioned that peripheral arterial disease is under-recognized in women because the symptoms that present in women
differ from the symptoms that present in men.
Dr. Han also spoke about chronic venous insufficiency, caused by damage to the valves that keep blood flowing to the heart from the lower
limbs.

The doctor spoke about the pancreas, a glandular organ that produces insulin and controls the levels of sugar in the blood.
In the course of the presentation, the doctor discussed pancreas transplantation in diabetics, an option for those with
uncontrollable diabetes. Unfortunately, this procedure is not done on patients who have been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
Dr. Shapiro also discussed an alternate treatment mode, the insulin pump, a device that mimics the pancreas.
A glucose sensor sends warnings when the blood glucose is either too high or too low, stimulating the pump to deliver insulin
automatically.
Dr. Shapiro is the Surgical Director of the Kidney and Pancreas Transplant Program at Mount Sinai's
Recanati/Miller Transplantation Institute, one of the most comprehensive transplantation centers in the world, with one of the
largest living donor programs in the U.S.

with your body to notice the first symptoms, as the chances of a cure are quite high. Dr. Lee advised the audience to wear sun-screen lotion and to avoid being in the
sun for long periods of time.
